Process Equipment and Control Engineering originally named Chemical Machinery, was founded in the early 1950s. It was named as Chemical Equipment and Machinery according to the undergraduate course catalog promulgated in 1986 and 1993. The undergraduate course catalog adjustment of 1998 adjusted to the current "Process Equipment and Control Engineering ". Over the past 50 years, a large number of outstanding graduates were supplied for China's mechanical and chemical industry, including academicians, renowned university presidents, and important  leaders of government and business, etc.

Process Equipment and Control Engineering is a new interdisciplinary major combined with mechanical, chemical, electricity, energy, information, and materials engineering, mainly related to advanced equipment and control technology for heat transfer, mass transfer, chemical reaction and transport in the process of natural various substances through chemical and physical treatment to products. Process industry is the research and service targets, with a multidisciplinary, integrated, infiltration and rely on each other characteristics.

Wide professional caliber, wide coverage, a significant engineering features, strong adaptability and so on characterize Process Equipment and Control Engineering. It covers process, equipment and control and other industrial fields. Chemical Engineering and Technology is the main subject to support the process. Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics support the equipment. Control Science and Technology, Electronic Science and Technology support the control. Mechanics, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, materials and processing, chemistry, chemical engineering and technology, information technology are the theoretical basis of specialty. Through systematic theoretical study and engineering practice, graduates have extensive knowledge and high work ability and employment adaptability. Graduates engaged in petrochemical, energy, power, environmental protection, light industry, food, medicine, refrigeration and air conditioning, process equipment and control, automation, and other fields' research and development, production operation and organizational management, or teaching and research work.

Currently there are 7 teachers, 1 laboratory assistant in Process Equipment and Control Engineering of Shanghai Institute of Technology. Among its staff members, there are 5Ph.D, 1 professor, 1 associate professor. They focused on the combination of equipment and control, pressure pipeline defect assessment, stainless steel welding, nondestructive testing, advanced process equipment technology, and fluid measurement and control technology etc. Through the joint efforts of all teaching and research staff, great achievements have been achieved in scientific research. In the past 5 years, over 30 municipal issues and horizontal research projects are undertaken, over 40 papers have been published in various journals, nearly 20 papers of it were included by SCI and EI. National patent applications are nearly 10.

After nearly a decade of development, laboratory construction has a strong strength and considerable development. At present, the major teaching facilities include: thin-walled vessel stress measurement device, thick-walled cylinder explosive devices, external pressure vessel failure device, piston compressor performance testing device, centrifugal pump integrated performance test equipment, engineering fluid mechanics general experimental device(Renault experiments, Bernoulli equation experiment  in steady flow of incompressible fluid, Pitot flow measurement experiment, drag coefficient of local and along the way measurement experiment), non-destructive testing equipments such as ultrasound testing, magnetic testing and color testing, process equipment installation and debugging skills training equipment, multi-strategy  training platform for process control  integrated system, to achieve mechatronics automatic control and measurement of experimental device.

A number of internal and external teaching internship training bases meet professional requirements are set up, school-enterprise cooperation is expanded and deepened, to broaden students knowledge in engineering technology practice and strengthen the innovative spirit and practical ability. Through production, learning and research to strengthen cooperation with enterprises and research institutes, external-school practice bases are established in Shanghai petroleum and chemical corporation, Shanghai roland pressure vessels corporation, Shanghai electric compressor and pump Co., LTD, Shanghai Tofflon science and technology Co., LTD, Shanghai far-east pharmaceutical machinery Co., LTD, Shanghai HIGHLY compressor group, Shanghai weer pump Co., LTD and etc. These bases have better practice facilities, a stable guiding team for students to develop awareness internships, production internships, graduate internships, and other relevant professional teaching practice and research training.

At the same time, students are encouraged to actively participate in scientific research and give full play the technological innovation ability. As long as professional or interested project is innovational, has research value, we equip with the appropriate guidance to them. Remarkable results have been achieved in research. Awards are won in national university process equipment practice and innovation contest and national university Freescale smart car contests etc.
